to be achieved by UN member states by 2030.
The SDGs are addressed in one of the targets set for 2030
in “Challenges for the Future of Tokyo: What Investments Should Be Made Now to Secure a Better Future,”
which was issued by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.
As a policy collaborator for the Japanese
government, we promote the realization of the SDGs through our daily business activities, thereby
contributing to sustainable societal growth.
We support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
We use the BRING UNIFORM* uniform recycling system provided by JEPLAN, Inc. to recycle company uniforms being discarded according to their material (chemical recycling / material recycling) in an effort to reduce the environmental impact of uniforms.
While our previous uniforms were treated as industrial waste when no longer needed and were usually incinerated, standardized uniforms are suitable for recycling.
In the past, Tokyo Water Co., Ltd. used uniforms made from recycled plastic bottles, shipped uniforms set to be discarded to developing countries, and participated in initiatives to provide funds for polio vaccinations for children and to provide opportunities for local employment.
Using the uniform recycling system, we can recycle about 1,500 kg of uniforms a year that would otherwise have been treated as industrial waste.
Tokyo Water Co., Ltd. remains committed to actively reducing the environmental impact to contribute to a sustainable society.
What is BRING UNIFORM?
It is a uniform recycling system to collect used uniforms, recycle them according to their material, and circulate them back to the market.
We provided used work clothes that needed to be discarded when launching our new company to Furugi de Vaccine and participated in the initiative that is linked to the creation of jobs in other countries and employment opportunities for people with disabilities in Japan.
Participation in this initiative is also linked to donation of polio vaccination fees for children in developing countries.
What is Furugi de Vaccine?
Furugi de Vaccine is a service provided by Japan Reuse System to ship clothing and other articles received to other places, especially developing countries, and create jobs in those countries through the sorting and sale of the clothing. It also provides donations that cover the polio vaccination fees for five children per donation. Donations have provided polio vaccines for a total of 2,719,240 children to date, and about 22,063,050 articles of clothing have been reused (as of October 1, 2020). The initiative began in 2010 and received a Special Award (sponsored by the Prime Minister) in the 2019 Japan SDGs Awards*.
