International Projects

In collaboration with the Bureau of Waterworks Tokyo Metropolitan Government, we utilize the technologies and managerial expertise that we have developed for the support of Tokyo’s water supply system to make international contributions aimed at facilitating the healthy management of water supply systems in developing countries and many other regions. We participate proactively in international contribution projects by taking full advantage of the waterworks-related expertise that we have built up as a member of the Tokyo Water Group.

Projects for non-revenue water reduction

We contribute to reducing non-revenue water (water produced but not billed) in developing countries that have difficulty collecting water rates due to water leakages, thefts, etc. through ODA-based infrastructure development and other activities.

Myanmar

A pilot project for non-revenue water reduction was implemented in Yangon, the largest city of Myanmar, in 2014. Taking the results of this project into account, we have implemented the detection of leaks, replacement and repair of water pipes, and replacement and installation of water meters, while providing technical instructions to local people, thereby contributing to reducing non-revenue water in the city.

Dispatching experts to developing countries

We dispatch experts to work to improve water supply systems in developing countries. They are mainly engaged in the development of human resources who can play leadership roles in the reduction of non-revenue water, provide training programs on financial management, asset management, etc. and offer technological instructions on management planning, improvement of meter management, water meter reading, and so on.

India

We dispatched experts in measures for reducing non-revenue water to Varanasi, India, to participate in a JICA safety and health improvement project. The experts provided technical training to fortify the non-revenue water reduction capacity of the Varanasi water supply and sewerage bureau (Jal Kal). In FY2022, we launched technical instruction in a pilot area in the city as part of technical training.

Rwanda

We dispatched experts in water supply business management to participate in the JICA Project for WASAC Utility turnaround with KAIZEN approach being carried out in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda. To strengthen the financial management capacity of the Water and Sanitation Corporation (WASAC) in Rwanda and help it achieve sustainable water business management, the experts provide advice on fee collection, customer management, and organizational improvement based on their experiences in water business in Tokyo.

Implementation of waterworks technological training for overseas participants

We are commissioned by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), overseas water utilities and other entities to undertake the provision of training programs to international participants on leak detection, non-revenue water reduction measures, maintenance of waterworks facilities, etc. A new training project was launched in January 2014 to provide instructor training courses to employees of local water suppliers at a leakage detection training field set up by TSS Tokyo Water Co., Ltd. in Malaysia (state of Penang).

Training support

We send instructors to provide training for administrative officials and engineers in the water supply industry in developing countries who have been accepted as JICA trainees.

Provision of information

We deliver presentations on our research findings in symposiums, workshops, etc. and participate in exhibitions by setting up our own booths, both inside and outside Japan.
